The Zuiderzee was a southern bay of the North Sea in the Netherlands, known for its unpredictable waters and dangerous floods, which brought trade, food and prosperity as well as destruction and danger. It was only after the sea was closed off by the Afsluitdijk, that its unpredictability was tamed and it became an inland lake known as the IJsselmeer.
